Day 23: Legacy

“A good man leaves an inheritance [of moral stability and goodness] to his children’s children….”  - Proverbs 13:22 (AMPC)

Legacy is living a life that outlives you. It refers to something handed down from the past by a ancestor or predecessor. Every person reading this is a product of someone else investing in your life. We all are standing on the shoulders of someone else. Legacy is about learning from the past, living in the present and building for the future.

In essence, everything you possess today, whether good or bad, is your legacy. This will pass down to those who come after you. A good legacy isn’t free and certainly isn’t instant. Leaving a good legacy takes effort and intentionality. It will require that you invest your time, your money and yourself for the benefit of another.

When we realize that we are leaving a legacy behind, and when we become legacy minded, our perspective changes radically. Leaving a legacy affects what we do, how we live, and it affects our character. Legacy helps us decide the kind of life we want to live, and the kind of life we want to leave. To operate with such a mentality, our perspective must change. The fact is, if we do not make plans for a better tomorrow, tomorrow will be no better. The only boundary of your legacy is the boundary you place on yourself.

You may be thinking, “What about me? I didn’t have a good legacy passed down to me. What am i supposed to do.” The good news is that we can all begin right where we are.

If you were the first to accept Jesus Christ as your Lord in your family tree, make sure you are not the last. If you grew up around stingy people, make sure you are generous and leave a legacy of generosity. If you were brought up around a negative environment, renew your mind and those that follow you will have renewed minds washed with the water of God’s Word. If you were brought up in a home of broken promises and strife, then turn the tables on your past and go forward with integrity, honor and peace.

Today’s Declaration

Lord, I thank you that you are my Father and you that you left me with an impeccable legacy. I choose to live an intentional life and pass on to those around me what you have deposited in me. You held nothing back and I will hold nothing back. I live to represent you and to add value to people’s lives.
